University in Taiwan honors Martin Winter with a rare award

The Taiwanese National Cheng Kung National University (NCKU) honored Prof. Martin Winter as Honorary Chair Professor for his outstanding and groundbreaking academic achievements in the field of battery research. The award ceremony took place on 13 September in a festive setting in Tainan, the university headquarters on Taiwan's southwest coast.

"The title 'Honorary Chair Professor' expresses a special honor in Taiwan, which is shared only by very few selected people," says Prof. Tungyang Chen, Vice President of NCKU. With this award Winter can be found in a number of renowned title holders. For example, Dr. Akira Suzuki from Japan, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry eight years ago, received the NCKU title in 2016.

For Martin Winter, it is the second honorary professorship from Taiwan. In November last year, the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology awarded the professor for his contributions in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion (read more here).

Martin Winter returned not only with a new honorary title from his stay in Taiwan, but also with a new function. NCKU Chair Professor Jow-Lay Huang, Director of the newly founded "Hierarchical Green-Energy Materials (Hi-GEM) Research Center", welcomed Winter as a member of the Hi-GEM Scientific Advisory Board. The Hi-GEM is a multi-discipline research center focusing on green energy materials and its members include 29 professors, several postdoctoral research associates, and many graduate students in materials science, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, optoelectronic science, and industrial design. The Hi-GEM is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Taiwan.
