In hall 2, at the joint booth of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the MEET Battery Research Center of Muenster University was one of the major exhibitors. Just as fair visitors from academia and industry also the Ministry of Science of NRW Svenja Schulze and the Ministry of Economics of NRW Garrelt Duin seized the opportunity to gain insight into the research and development activities of MEET.

In view of the transition from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources, powerful electrochemical energy storage devices for motive and stationary applications are of utmost importance. The key to success are the individual cell materials. “The central mission of MEET is the design of innovative battery materials”, explains Prof. Dr. Martin Winter, scientific director of MEET. Besides the established lithium-ion technology the MEET team is also working on systems of the so-called “Next Generation”, e.g. lithium-air or lithium-sulfur chemistries.

The highlight of the exhibition in Hannover is the pilot plant production line of MEET. While MEET is focusing on basic materials science, research is carried out beyond the laboratory scale. The entire battery supply chain – from the raw materials through to the final battery cell – is set out on the pilot plant scale, allowing upscaling and comprehensive performance tailoring and evaluation of various cell components. Up to 200 cells per week can be assembled on two different battery cell manufacturing lines.
