Willem C. Vis Moot Court

The Willem C. Vis Moot Court is an international legal competition in which student teams from around the world participate. This largest moot court competition in the world is organized by the Institute of International Commercial Law at Pace University School of Law, New York, in cooperation with UNCITRAL (United Nations Commission on International Trade Law) and other arbitration institutions. The competition consists of a written and an oral component and spans approximately six months. Initially, the student teams will work on a hypothetical case and draft a statement of claim as the plaintiff. The case must be argued in English, both in the written submissions and in the subsequent oral arguments. Later in the moot court, each team will receive a statement of claim from another group and respond to it in the form of a statement of defense.

The PAX Moot is an international moot court competition in private international law. In the written phase, students submit briefs for both the applicant and the respondent, addressing international conventions and EU regulations in the context of globalization based on a hypothetical case. Key issues regularly include jurisdiction, choice of law, and the recognition and enforcement of judgments. In the subsequent oral phase, teams from participating universities compete against each other, attempting to persuade the court of their position. The venue for the oral competition changes annually and this year is Sofia, Bulgaria.
