Standardization of heading formatting
The options – which, according to the handbook, were originally intended only for exceptional cases – to display headings in all capital letters (uppercase) have now been abolished in favour of accessibility and uniformity in presentation.
In the context of a recent accessibility audit, we were informed that text written in all capital letters is generally more difficult to read than the "normal" variant with uppercase and lowercase letters. This particularly affects people with dyslexia or other reading difficulties. Furthermore, the freely adjustable option sometimes led to seemingly arbitrary changes in presentation, even within the smallest sections. We were repeatedly informed about inconsistencies in presentation from various sides.
As a logical consequence, we have decided not to offer the options for uppercase letters any more. In the Flex modules, these have already been removed and the headings will now be displayed uniformly only in bold "normal" typeface (with capitals and lower case letters), the font sizes remain unchanged.
The change in presentation is purely CSS-based and has already been implemented. No refreshing of sections/pages is required, the change should be visible at the latest with an update of the page view. If headings are still displayed in uppercase, this could indicate a manual setting to uppercase letters in the input field. We kindly ask you to adjust such cases to the normal typeface in the sense of accessibility and uniformity.
The corresponding handbook articles and web instructions have already been adjusted. If you have any questions, we are happy to help.
