On 14 April at 6 p.m., Montoro will present the conclusions for New Testament textual criticism that result from his investigations into the evaluation of Pauline citations in Chrysostom. External listeners are also welcome to attend the lecture ‘Counting with Coherence: Why Commentary Manuscripts should be included systematically in the “Liste” and treated distinctively in the ECM’ in the INTF meeting room (Pferdegasse 1).
The Hermann Kunst-Stiftung zur Förderung der neutestamentlichen Textforschung mourns the death of former German President Prof Dr Horst Köhler. He chaired the Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2019. Horst Köhler was closely associated with the Foundation and the INTF. He celebrated the 50th anniversary of the INTF and the memory of Kurt Aland with us. Horst Köhler worked tirelessly to promote research into the Urtext. He remains in our grateful memory.
The former long-standing director of the Institute for New Testament Textual Research, Prof. Dr. Barbara Aland, passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning. Barbara Aland headed the Institute from 1983-2002 and was managing director of the Hermann Kunst-Foundation. She remained closely associated with the INTF, the Bible Museum and the Foundation. Our thoughts are with her family. She will be missed by us and by the scientific community.
‘Our museums are not just a small hobby for the university, but essential for social transfer’. Prorector Prof. Michael Quante was enthusiastic about the ‘Körper.Kult.Religion’ exhibition at the opening on Friday 25 October. It is ‘exemplary for the provision of socio-cultural knowledge, without which we will not be able to cope in our society in the long term’. In particular, he emphasised the intercultural multi-perspectivity of the project, which was realised by the Cluster of Excellence ‘Religion and Politics’. Representatives from around 15 disciplines at the university, such as Classical Studies, Theology, Sociology and Cultural Studies, took part.
The Revelation of John, the last book of the New Testament, is the most cryptic text in the Bible. Also known as the "Apocalypse", the visions of the end times depict the end of the world in drastic images. The interpretation of the individual motifs and numerical values is still disputed today. The Institute for Septuagint and Biblical Textual Research (ISBTF) at Wuppertal University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with INTF, has now produced a reliable Greek textual basis on the basis of which research, teaching, translation and church practice can reinterpret the controversial text. The four-volume edition is part of the "Editio Critica Maior", which aims to produce a complete edition of the Greek New Testament by 2030
The DFG-funded GloBil project organised a workshop at the beginning of July in cooperation with the Department of Religious Studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. In the spirit of the GloBil project, which seeks to decolonise the historical legacy of Bible translations and Bible societies, the workshop offered German and Ghanaian scholars the opportunity to discuss and exchange views on aspects of Bible history, reception and dissemination of mother-tongue Bibles in (post-)colonial Ghana. Prof Holger Strutwolf, Director of INTF, reported on the history of the Bible's origins in Greek texts.
The 65th anniversary of the Institute for New Testament Textual Research (INTF), the 60th anniversary of the Hermann Kunst Foundation and the 45th anniversary of the Bible Museum will be celebrated with a major special exhibition from 21 May to 29 September. A good 100 exhibits will shed light on the history of the three institutions and New Testament textual research. One particularly valuable exhibit, which will only be on display for three months for conservation reasons, is Martin Luther's handwritten annotations on Jeremiah from 1530. Luther was not satisfied with a translation once it was completed, but revised his Bible translations several times. To this day, the text of the Bible is adapted to the newest scientific knowledge and modern language.
