I am broadly interested in the stable isotope geochemistry of bio-relevant elements (e.g. carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and phosphorus) and trace metals (e.g. molybdenum and iron) as well as their biogeochemical behavior and cycling in sedimentary and aqueous (paleo-)environments. Understanding these processes and associated formation/reaction of mineral phases are paramount for their development and application as environmental proxies. In turn, this allows to reconstruct past biogeochemical conditions and processes from the geological record. In this context, I am investigating biogeochemical processes in modern marine and lacustrine (sedimentary) environments where the target elements are involved with to approach the following issues:

    • Formation and preservation of geochemical signatures in the sedimentary/geological record
    • Trace metal cycling in sediments during early diagenesis
    • Role of sulfurized organic matter in particle-driven nutrient and trace metal cycling in the sediment-water interface
    • Trace metal incorporation in authigenic and detrital particles (e.g. carbonate, clay, oxides, sulfides)
    • Investigation of carbonates and stromatolites as paleo-environmental archives

  • Grants and other activities

    • Fulbright Fellowship for a research stay from January to July 2016 at the Iowa State University in Ames (USA) (8,000 €)
