  • Language requirements for individual degree programmes

Two-subject bachelor’s programme with teaching qualification for GymGes in accordance with LABG 2016/PO 2018 (from WiSe 2018/19)

A Latinum (Latin language) certificate is required for enrolment in the Master of Education programme (MEd) with the aim of obtaining teaching qualification for university-preparatory secondary schools in Germany, i.e. Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen (GymGes). Therefore, we recommend passing the Latinum by the end of your bachelor’s programme.

In addition, to enrol in the MEd GymGes programme, you have to provide proof of basic knowledge of the Biblical languages Greek and Hebrew.

You are required to enrol in the two language courses (4 hours of instruction per week (SWS) each) “Introduction to Biblical languages” via QISPOS. Passing these courses confirms that you possess the required basic knowledge.

Two-subject bachelor's programme with teaching qualification for GymGes in accordance with LABG 2009/PO 2011 (from WiSe 2016/17)

Students who commenced their studies between WiSe 2016/17 and WiSe 2018/19, and are still studying in accordance with the 2011 examination regulations: In the so-called “Propaedeutic Module” you can sign up to take the one language course (for 4 hours of instruction per week (SWS)) via QISPOS, but unfortunately not the second course. Nonetheless you must also complete and pass the second language course (for 4 hours of instruction per week (SWS)). You will receive a certificate confirming that you have passed the course, which must be submitted when you enrol in the MEd GymGes programme.

Students who commenced their studies before WiSe 2016/17 should consult with the Study Office concerning the language requirements.

Mag. Theol. [analogous to Mod. Diplom and Diplom ‘88]

Sufficient knowledge of Hebrew, Greek and Latin is required, which can be verified by one of the following:

    a) university entrance qualification
    b) certificates of relevant language examinations administered by a state examination authority
    c) successful participation in language courses offered by the Faculty of Catholic Theology
    d) successful participation in equivalent courses offered at theological educational institutions

Students who are unable to provide any of the required language certificates at the beginning of their studies must acquire knowledge of Latin, as well as Greek or Hebrew.

Students should expect to study an additional semester (not included in the standard duration of study) for each language acquired.

Language skills in Greek or Hebrew are required for participating in the introductory seminar on exegesis in the core phase of study. Proof of the other language skills must be submitted in order to gain admission to the first exegetical subject examination in the advanced phase.

Students are required to complete one language course (6 hours of instruction per week (SWS)) for each language.

The course can be continued with an advanced course or a reading course. Successful completion is a requirement for students of a full theological degree programme who intend to write a master's thesis in the subject of the Old Testament or for those who are transferring to a different university and need to provide proof of having taken an 8-SWS Hebrew course.
