Despite the urgency emanating from the ecological crises, the political pursuit of the global common good faces considerable resistance. Offering a structural lens on systems of resource conversion for meeting needs, the perspective of provisioning systems can be applied to identify starting points for change. Based on results of the ‘EU 1.5°-Lifestyles’ research project, this article examines structures that hinder a sustainability transformation as well as measures for transforming them, using the food system as an example. At the heart of these measures is the aim of ensuring individual and collective wellbeing while improving the efficiency of resource use in a holistic way. However, a key challenge for their implementation is the political governance of a sustainability transformation, which is currently characterised by power asymmetries and therefore unequal opportunities to participate in shaping it.
