The reception of the encyclical Laudato si’ has led to turbulence in the media under the special sociological conditions of French Catholicism. The unsuspicious-sounding formulation of an integral ecology came up against contexts in which this short formula aroused contradictory associations. The focus on a return to ways of life critical of growth and capitalism out of respect for a nature that needs to be protected was compatible with left-wing and right-wing political milieus. Over a period of seven years, the magazine Limite has tested communication in this area of tension in four issues per year and experienced the incompatibility of certain ideological positions. In religion-related research, this case study has received a lot of attention in a republic that sees itself as secular. The reconstructed lines of conflict are also relevant for a self-critical view of socio-ethical and theological speaking to improve the precision of understanding on the pressing questions of ecological justice and climate protection.
