Abstract

Public service broadcasting (PSB) in Germany is facing entirely new challenges given the continuous progression of digitalization. A relic of a bygone media world to some, PSB has recently been strengthened by the Federal Constitutional Court on the one hand, by a new teleservices mandate given by the governors of the German Federal States on the other. Both will be the subjects of this article. To use this momentum is the vital challenge of the hour for public broadcasters: especially by addressing media users in an intelligent, smart manner, who are otherwise provided with ever more personalized content by global, data collecting media corporations. If we succeed in transporting integrity and uniqueness into our digital distribution channels, a favourable moment might arise for public service broadcasting.
