The article addresses the central areas of discussion in the design of the German pension system over the past 40 years. Positions from Christian social ethicists and social scientists, church documents as well as statements from Christian organizations are included. The central objects of the paper are conceptual questions of generations analysis, demographic challenges, a family friendly design of pension insurance, and gender equality in the pension system. Attention is also drawn to the harmonisation of pension systems and the role of elderly in society. Furthermore, desiderata of social ethical reflection are pointed out.
