Codex TR-Iüne 204-2 is a rich and wide-ranging music collection, comprising 48 instrumental and 116 vocal works across 212 pages. Compiled in the second half of the nineteenth century by an anonymous scribe, it preserves a remarkable—at times even unique—selection of both old and newly composed pieces of Ottoman art music.
The manuscript is written in Hampartsum notation, a notation system developed in the early nineteenth century and widely adopted among the diverse ethnic and confessional communities of the Ottoman capital. Its repertoire captures an era of profound cultural, political, and economic transformation within the Ottoman Empire, reflecting the effort to record and transmit musical traditions both past and present.
This groundbreaking five-volume edition makes the codex accessible to modern scholarship for the very first time.
Volume CMO1-I/2a presents the meticulously prepared critical edition of its instrumental repertoire—an indispensable resource for musicologists, performers, and anyone interested in the rich heritage of Ottoman music.
Volume CMO1-I/2b presents the critical edition of the comprehensive vocal music repertoire included in this codex, featuring rare pieces in Turkish and Persian.
This accompanying volume provides the Introduction to the music edition, offering detailed insights into the manuscript’s origins and the editorial methodology. It also contains the Critical Commentary, which presents extensive, meticulously compiled information on each of the edited pieces. Together, these materials serve as an essential companion to volumes CMO1-I/2a and CMO1-I/2b.
