New at the CDSC: Our lectures for the general public

Scientific research shapes not only our daily lives, but also public debate and political decision-making. As scientific and technological developments become increasingly influential, it is more important than ever that research is accessible beyond academic circles. Only when the foundations, methods, assumptions, and uncertainties of scientific work are understandable can research help inform public discussion and decision-making.

Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and the study of complex systems play an increasingly important role in many areas of modern life, from automated decision-making and health and climate research to the analysis of social dynamics. At the same time, they raise various questions: How do complex systems give rise to patterns and behaviours that cannot be predicted from the properties of their individual components alone? Why do some systems behave in ways that defy our intuitions and every-day ideas of cause and effect? What opportunities do new technologies create, and where are their limits?

This is where the lecture series “CDSC Interfaces” comes in. Inspired by the idea of interfaces as points of exchange and connection, the series brings science and the public into conversation. Rather than focusing on technical details, the lectures aim to foster a deeper understanding of the relationships and mechanisms that shape the world around us.

No prior knowledge is required—curiosity is enough.

Please note that the lectures are held in German.
