At UM, regarding international post-docs from the whole world, the central university unit responsible for welcome and advice in Münster is the Welcome Centre. Full or sandwich doctorate at UM

If you are interested in a full or sandwich doctorate at the University of Münster, you will find below some basic information for orientation and preparation.

In Germany, as well as in the UM, there are two types of doctorate: the individual and the so-called structured doctorate, which is offered in a doctoral programme, for example within a "research training group" or a "graduate school". The individual doctorate is carried out under the supervision of one professor, whereas the doctoral candidate may work either autonomously or in a research team. In structured doctoral programmes, the doctoral student is usually part of a research group and a group of doctoral students, works on a pre-established theme and has more than one supervisor. In the research groups, the doctoral candidates participate in training courses, exchange information about their dissertations and thus receive stimuli for their own research.

  • A list of the structured doctoral programmes at UM is available here. Each programme has its own pre-established application process, requirements and deadlines, so it is important to check the details on the website of the programme of interest and plan ahead.
  • A list of the individual doctoral options is available here [de] (in German only). The admission requirements are detailed in the regulations for each doctoral degree ("Promotionsordnung" in German).

Finding a supervisor is certainly the biggest challenge. However, there is no one better than yourself to assess which professor suits your research field and who could be interested in your doctoral project and agree to supervise you. Therefore, it is important that you check the institute's websites and analyse the profiles of the professors of your areas of interest in detail. In the case of a sandwich doctorate, we strongly recommend asking for the support and intermediation of you supervisor in Brazil in order to find and contact a supervisor at the University of Münster.

With regard to funding opportunities - another big challenge - we recommend that you follow the calls and check the websites of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other Brazilian, German and European funding agencies on a regular basis, and plan ahead to get a letter of acceptance from a professor. Information about DAAD calls is available here [pt]; further funding possibilities are listed on DAAD’s database, available here.

In the institutes, the secretariats are available to answer content-related questions as to a doctoral programme. As a central UM unit, the Graduate Centre provides support to international doctoral students concerning the admission and questions related to their stay in Münster, and holds meetings and informative events for international doctoral candidates on extracurricular and interdisciplinary matters during their stay in Münster.

For doctoral candidates from Brazil, the Brazil Centre provides complementary, specialized orientation and attention, based on our vast experience and knowledge of the collaborations between the UM and Brazil, besides offering support in Brazil, through our Liaison Office in São Paulo.
