  • Overview

    The ability to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying cell biological processes has become a cornerstone of modern biology and is a prerequisite for understanding physiology and disease. Students of the Special Study Program "Quantitative Cell Biology" participate in research projects that investigate the dynamics of biologically relevant molecules, cellular structures, and physiological processes in a quantitative manner. The SSP integrates molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, physiology, and advanced microscopy. The modules emphasize quantitative approaches to analyse biological processes at different scales. A particular focus will be the theory and application of advanced imaging techniques and image processing. Students will also be familiarized with the use of modern genome editing techniques for the genetic analysis of cells and model organisms.

  • SSP Structure

    The SSP Quantitative Cell Biology follows the structure of the MSc Biosciences program, which consist of six 4-weeks Advanced Modules (including the Module 'Integrative Biologie', two additional 8-weeks Research Modules (RM) during the first year, a Project Management Module plus a final Master Thesis accompanied by supporting satellite modules during the second year.

    Requirements to obtain the SSP Quantitative Cell Biology certificate:

    To obtain the certificate it will be necessary to complete a total of 20CPs in advanced modules and/or research modules with the "Quantitative Cell Biology" label.

    Hence, students must select advanced modules and research modules by following one of the two options below:

    OPTION 1: Choose 2 Advanced Modules (5 + 5 CPs) and 1 Research Module (10 CPs) with the "Quantitative Cell Biology" label.

    or,

    OPTION 2: Choose 2 Research Modules (10 + 10 CPs) with the "Quantitative Cell Biology" label.

    In addition, the student will have to perform his/her Master Thesis in (or associated with) one of the Quantitative Cell Biology research groups.
