The Archaeological Museum of the University of Münster sees itself as a vibrant place of knowledge, education and dialogue. Closely linked to research and teaching, we contribute to transferring scientifically generated knowledge to society and thus actively shaping the civic responsibility of the University of Münster.

Collecting and preserving

The central tasks of our museum include the systematic and responsible collection of objects as a contribution to the documentation and research of material culture, as well as the preservation of the artefacts entrusted to us through conservation measures and careful documentation in accordance with international standards and the application of modern technologies. In this way, we secure cultural heritage for future generations and at the same time create the basis for research, teaching and transfer.

Imparting knowledge – understanding the past

Our diverse collections – from originals and casts of ancient sculptures to coins and models to holograms and ‘digital twins’ – enable visitors to vividly experience the cultures of the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, Egypt, South Arabia, and late medieval and early modern Münster. In doing so, we promote critical engagement with historical contexts and encourage reflection on cultural developments.

Shaping transfer – enriching society

In line with the University of Münster's transfer strategy, we focus on:

Science communication: Through exhibitions, guided tours, lectures and digital offerings, we make archaeological research results accessible to a broad audience.

Lifelong learning: We offer educational formats for different target groups in order to deepen understanding of archaeological topics and promote interest in cultural heritage.

Citizen science: We encourage active participation in scientific projects and promote dialogue between science and society.

Cultural participation: As a cultural institution, we contribute to the diversity of social life and create spaces for intercultural exchange.

Living sustainability – securing the future

We are committed to sustainable museum work that takes ecological, social and economic aspects into account. In doing so, we are guided by the Sustainable Development Goals and the sustainability strategy of the University of Münster.

Working together – strengthening cooperation

In cooperation with schools, cultural institutions, scientific institutions and civil society actors, we develop innovative projects that promote knowledge transfer and strengthen cultural awareness.

With this mission statement, we reaffirm our commitment to shaping the Archaeological Museum as a place of dialogue between science and society and to making a lasting contribution to cultural education.
