The Research Group welcomes Jenny Schmidt

Jenny joint the group just recently on 2016-11-01. We welcome her and appreciate her newest article as the  European Commission has chosen the article „Using social network analysis to identify key stakeholders in agricultural biodiversity governance and related land-use decisions at regional and local level“ (read the article) by working group member Jenny Schmidt for its newsletter “Science for Environment Policy”, Issue 476. The newsletter is sent out weekly to over 20.000 subscribers and informs about new research findings that are relevant for European environmental policy.

Please find the article from the newsletter here:

International Symposium on Biological Invasion and II Jornada da Botânica
The “International Symposium on Biological Invasion” and “II Jornada da Botânica” is an international conference held from July 25th to 26th 2016 in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The conference aims to link different research projects from the broad field of Plant Ecology and to improve the interaction of undergraduate and graduate students with Brazilian and foreign researchers. Further, this event intends to increase knowledge about exotic species and to raise awareness of their potential impacts on ecosystems together with active multipliers such as public and educational bodies, institutions of nature conservation and forestry, as well as people involved in habitat restoration and sustainable land use, especially considering global change and the challenges of fertile land loss, soil degradation and desertification. A multi-skilled, international group of experts in biological invasions from Brazil, Portugal and Germany will join the conference to present and discuss results achieved in different habitat types of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and dune vegetation from Portugal in order to develop new scientific ideas that lead to future partnerships and new research in the field of biological invasions in a wide range of different ecosystems. With a diversified program, the event will inspire students to study biodiversity on different levels, including species, communities and ecosystems, as well as the interactions between and among native and exotic species and the abiotic environment. Spectral fingerprints of plant species - How and why plant species can be distinguished based on hyperspectral data

The latest special issue „Field Spectroscopy and Radiometry” of the open access journal Remote Sensing features tree publications with contributions from André Große-Stoltenberg (Pub. 1-3), Jan Lehmann (Pub. 2) and Jan Thiele (Pub. 3) of the Research Group “Applied Landscape Ecology and Ecological Planning”. The studies deal with the question how plant species can be distinguished based on their spectral fingerprint linked with (1) leaf structure, (2) leaf biochemistry, and (3) leaf and canopy ecophysiological properties. The latter two studies focus on distinguishing the invasive shrub Acacia longifolia in Mediterranean dune ecosystems, and contribute to the research projects "QUEEN" (funded by DFG) and "INSPECTED.NET" (EU FP7).

Esther Dörendahl gave a presentation at the ‘1st International Conference on Rural Development and Climate Change’ in Guatemala (19.10.-22.10.2014), organized by GIZ. The title of the presentation was: ‘Boundary Work for Sustainable Water Resources Management – Research from South Africa.’
"ESA Trains Tomorrow's Earth Observation Scientists":
André Große-Stoltenberg was selected to participate in the "5th ESA
Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing" of the European Space Agency (ESA) from the 8th until the 12th of  September at the University of Valencia, Spain. The topics included the classification of airborne hyperspectral and LiDAR data, the analysis of field spectral data and biochemical vegetation properties as well as the possibilites of the new Sentinel satellites, whose data will be free and open access, of the European earth observation programme Copernicus.

Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt and Jan Lehmann visited from july 01-04, 2014 the Fundaςäo UNESCO HIDROEX and the  Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais in Frutal (MG). These institutions and the University of Münster recently have agreed upon a cooperation agreement. They are accompanied by a delegation of LEEP, UFV and Prof. J. Meira Neto.
Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt and Jan Lehman gave a three days course from 10.-12.06.2014 in Viςosa (MG, Brazil) with the title:
"Introduction to landscape spectroradiometry and the ASD Fieldspec4® equipment".
Participants were graduates, PhD students and professors of different departments that are interested to use this technology. The WG Environmental Planning uses the similar equipment in the QUEEN und INSPECTED.NET project.

From 10th to 19th of may Prof. Dr. João Augusto Alves Meira Neto from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa - Laboratório de Ecologia e Evolução de Plantas (LEEP) visitied our WG and had a talk in our colloquium. From 3rd of June to 19th of July Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt and Jan Lehmann will stay in Brasil to conduct collaborative resarch with the lab of Prof. Meira. Jan Lehmann will stay there for his phD work until december. The work is part of the EU funded INSPECTED.NET project.

In april/may the WG had a extensive field trip to the QUEEN research sites in Portugal. The ASD Fieldspec. was used to samle ground truth data. We collected plant samples collected and conserved them in liquid nitrogen for later analysis in the lab, and conducted GPS and UAV measurements to follow the invasion of the alien ecosystem engineer Acacia longifolia in these high nature value dune ecosystems. While this field campaign a second status workshop of the INSPECTED.NET project was held in Pinheira da Cruz together with the parnters from Bayreuth University, Lisboa University and the LEEP and Vicosa (BR)
