Thomas Keenan lehrt Medien- und Literaturwissenschaften am Bard College, wo er das Human Rights Project leitet und an der Entwicklung des ersten Human Rights-Studiengangs in den USA beteiligt war. Hier beschäftigen sich Studierende nicht nur interdisziplinär mit den Denktraditionen der Menschenrechts-Bewegung, sondern können sich auch aktiv in regionalen und globalen Projekten engagieren. Als Aktivist war Keenan unter anderem Vorstandsmitglied der Menschenrechts-Organisationen WITNESS und Scholars at Risk und Mitherausgeber der Zeitschriften Journal of Human Rights und Humanity. In den letzten Jahren beschäftigt er sich insbesondere mit den Auswirkungen der Social Media auf die Menschenrechts-Diskurse in Gesellschaft, Medien und Politik. Seine Bücher „New Media, Old Media“ (2006, gemeinsam herausgegeben mit Wendy Chun) und „Mengele’s Skull“ (2012, gemeinsam mit Eyal Weizmann) fanden auch in Deutschland ein breites Publikum.
Die Blumenberg Lectures 2017 sind eine Kooperation der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster mit den Skulptur Projekten. Sie werden ermöglicht durch die großzügige Unterstützung der Gerda Henkel-Stiftung, der Universitätsgesellschaft Münster e.V. und der Sparkasse Münsterland Ost.
Herr Keenan wird seine n Vortrag in englischer Sprache halten.
Thomas Keenan teaches Media Theory, Literature and Human Rights at Bard College, where he also heads the Human Rights Project and was involved in establishing the first human rights degree programme in the United States. The programme not only introduces students to the philosophical traditions of the human rights movement, but also allows them to play an active role in regional and global projects. As an activist himself, Keenan has served as a member of the board of the human rights organisations WITNESS and Scholars at Risk, and has worked as co-editor of the Journal of Human Rights and Humanity. In recent years, he has actively investigated the effects of social media on human rights discourse in society, media and politics. His books New Media, Old Media (2006, co-edited with Wendy Chun) and Mengele's Skull (2012, co-authored by Eyal Weizmann) were also well received in Germany.
