Facing Facts Together – University of Münster Launches SWOT Workshop Series as Part of the Excellence Strategy
With the launch of a multi-part workshop series focused on strategic self-reflection, the University of Münster has initiated a key element in its journey toward becoming a University of Excellence. The goal: a comprehensive SWOT analysis – assessing institutional Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats – to support evidence-based, participatory strategy development.
At the heart of the process lies a multi-perspective approach: through data-informed workshop formats, internal and external stakeholders – including members of the Rectorate, researchers at all career stages, and experts from the central administration – contribute their insights and experiences. The SWOT initiative exemplifies Münster’s participatory culture: strategic development is not imposed from above but shaped collectively.
The kick-off took place on October 21–22, 2024. Supported by an external facilitator and the Future Lab, representatives from research, university leadership, and administration engaged in two days of open, critical, and constructive dialogue about the University's current position. The workshops yielded initial action points and shared development perspectives.
The series will continue over the coming months with more in-depth thematic sessions. It will not only inform a potential application within Germany’s national Excellence Strategy, but also serve as a robust foundation for the University's med-term research strategy.
As part of the Excellence Strategy, the Future Lab coordinates the entire SWOT process, documents outcomes systematically, and supports the strategic translation of results into future measures.
