Scientists Create Microscopic Metamachines

A multinational, interdisciplinary team of scientists including Marcel Rey developed light-powered micromotors the width of a human hair setting a new benchmark for on-chip machinery. Thereby, a group of microscopic optical gears convert laser light into motion, enabling programmable mechanics at the microscale.

Insights into the fabrication of low-loss spin-wave waveguide network

A team from the research groups of Rudolf Bratschitsch, Sergej Demokritov, and Wolfram Pernice has fabricated spin-wave waveguides and large magnonic networks in a thin film of the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG). Their work paves the way for wafer-scale magnonic integrated circuits.

Congratulations to Wolfram Pernice, Associate Professor at the University of Münster, Professor of Experimental Physics at Heidelberg University, and Head of the Neuromorphic Quantum Photonics group at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics in Heidelberg!

The funding will enable him to integrate photonic computing on artificial neural networks with probabilistic computing methods with the goal of designing hybrid integrated photonic circuits capable of ultra-fast computing.

The German Chemical Society (GDCh) will honor Armido Studer with the Adolf von Baeyer Commemorative Medal on September 29th, in recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to the field of organic radical chemistry. As a globally renowned expert in this area, he has played a pivotal role in reviving interest in radical chemistry, sparking a new era of innovation and discovery.

Appointment of Robert Hein as Junior Professor

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Robert Hein, project leader in the CRC 1459 and member of the Center for Soft Nanoscience, on his recent appointment as W1 Junior Professor at the Organic Chemistry Institute of the University of Münster! Prior to this, he had already been leading a junior research group at the same institute.

Funded by the North Rhine-Westphalia Return Fellowship Program, his research group is currently exploring redox-switchable molecules and materials. Within the CRC 1459, he jointly leads research project C07 alongside Prof. Frank Glorius and Prof. Christian Nijhuis.
