Functional Biointerface Materials Inspired from Nature
Dr. Taolei Sun, Physikalisches Institut, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster

The interaction between biological entities (e.g. cells, biomolecules) and materials at the interface forms an important foundation for the development of high-performance biointerface materials and devices. From a bionic point of view, biological systems in nature have three important mechanisms in this aspect. The first is to utilize the multi-level structural effect to control the wettability on materials surface. The second is that biological processes usually apply highly selective weak interactions, e.g. hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions to solve the problems of biomolecule interaction. The third is that there is a unique chiral recognition mechanism in biological systems, since the biomolecules composing organisms are normally chiral molecules with very high chiral preference. Inspired from these bionic mechanisms, we developed three main research directions: nano-biointerface materials direction, smart biointerface materials direction and chiral biointerface materials direction.
