Am Donnerstag, dem 19.06.2008 hält Prof. Dr. Wieslaw Krolikowski, Nonlinear Science Center and Laser Physics Centre, Australian National University of Canberra, einen Vortrag über "Localized beams and solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media"

"Localized beams and solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media
In nonlinear media with a nonlocal nonlinear response the nonlinearity in a particular point is not determined solely by the  strength of wave in that very point (as it is the case for a local medium), but also in its neighborhood. It appears that nonlocality is a generic feature  of various nonlinear systems ranging from optics to matter waves. It may result from certain  transport processes such as atom diffusion, heat transfer, drift of electric  charges etc., or the long range of the inter-particle interaction. It turns out  that nonlocality may dramatically affect propagation of waves and their stability.
In this talk I  will  discuss here  the impact of nonlocality on the modulational  instability of plane waves, the  collapse of finite-size beams, and the formation,  stability and interaction of  spatial solitons. I  will also show that the concept of nonlocality can be applied  to a strictly local process of second harmonic generation enabling its better understanding, in particulary in the context of practically important pulse compression."

Am Mittwoch, dem 11.06.2008 hält Dr. Andrey Sukhorukov vom Nonlinear Science Center, Australian National University of Canberra, einen Vortrag über "Slow light in periodically structured media".

"Waveguides created in planar photonic crystals offer many unique opportunities for manipulating optical pulses, including the dramatic reduction of their propagation velocity. This presentation overviews recently developed approaches for spatial switching of slow-light pulses, utilizing the mixing of modes featuring identical group velocities yet different phase velocities. Different regimes of slow-pulse dynamics in linear and nonlinear coupled periodic waveguides will be discussed, based on the results of the theoretical analysis and the first proof-of-principle experiments in the microwave laboratory."
