Seminar Description
This seminar is the second part of the introductory module of the Master programme “Comparative Public Governance”. Building on the definition and foundations of comparative public governance provided in the first part of the introduction module taught in Twente, this course deepens and widens the analysis of key challenges of comparative public governance. It addresses current and future challenges for which solutions have to be found not only at the global and European, but also at the national, regional and local levels.
The seminar revolves around a range of “wicked problems” that challenge the problem-solving capacity of governance arrangements at various levels. These challenges include, inter alia, migration, climate change, poverty and social inequality, the erosion of democratic standards etc. Tackling these issues is complex as it typically requires collaboration between public and private actors, between actors at different levels of governance, and between actors from different jurisdictions. Moreover, many of these issues are marked by a high degree of uncertainty and, most importantly, political contestation.
The first part of the course will discuss theoretical angles to understand how public governance is challenged by such problems and what solutions could be devised. The second part then turns to group research projects. Each of these projects focuses on one particular challenge. Students are expected to do research on how these challenges are tackled politically. Which actors at which levels of governance are involved in the governance of these challenges? What policy solutions are currently produced? How effective are these policy solutions? What could be done to increase the effectiveness of the policy solutions? The results of these research projects will be presented and discussed in the third part of the seminar.
Requirements
In order to pass the seminar, students are required to prepare the reading assignments, participate in one of the research groups and write two essays and one term paper based on the results of the research projects.

That violent conflicts contribute to people fleeing and seeking safety elsewhere, is evident not least in the current developments in Syria, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and many other countries worldwide. But how exactly are violent conflicts and forced migration as well as the respective political responses connected? What role does gender play in political responses and in the experiences of those affected? The seminar seeks to explore these and further questions, aiming to critically reflect on the connections as well as the political divides of conflict, displacement, and gender. To this end, we link the political science fields of gender studies, conflict studies, and forced migration studies. After engaging with key concepts, we will examine the gendered complexity of the conflict-displacement nexus. Drawing on contemporary cases and developments, we will then turn to approaches of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, peacemaking, and refugee protection, and question the relevance of gender. Finally, we will delve into the impact conflict-induced displacement and the political responses on those affected, exploring both gender-specific risks and coping strategies.

In this course, our focus will be on exploring cutting-edge research in the field of religion that holds significant influence within the social sciences. The format of the course will be structured around readings, with each session dedicated to the analysis of a single article. Initially, all articles will be provided, but as the course progresses, participants will be encouraged to suggest readings based on certain criteria. Discussions in class will revolve around topics, research questions, research gaps filled by the article, methods and data, interpretation and discussion of results. For those with an interest in religion, the course will offer insights into contemporary debates within the sociology of religion, including topics such as the decline of religion in certain regions juxtaposed with its enduring significance in others. For those who may not (yet) share an interest in religion, the course will provide valuable exposure to state-of-the-art empirical research methods and enhance comprehension of academic article composition. Moreover, the course will serve as an opportunity for all participants to practice and refine their English language skills. Given that the texts under scrutiny will be in English, the course caters not only to proficient English speakers but also to those in the process of developing their language proficiency.

The module “Corporate Finance” analyses financial decision-making in companies with a special focus on the uncertainty of the consequences. This includes capital investment decisions and the question to what extend equity or debt should be used to finance the firm’s investment projects. The discussion builds on a thorough understanding of the functioning of financial markets and the valuation of securities and corporations. Learning about asset pricing models will concurrently improve the student’s ability to make smart financial decisions. The course lays the groundwork for the elective finance module in the 6th semester which will address the topic “investments” in greater detail.
The course introduces students to portfolio theory and develops an understanding of basic principles of asset pricing in financial markets (CAPM). Furthermore, capital structure issues are discussed and the Modigliani-Miller irrelevance theorem is put into perspective. Students will learn how companies should optimally satisfy their financial needs and how investment projects and securities can be valued. Additionally, the students will learn to use and select between different concepts of multi-period business valuation.
Topics and Learning Outcomes:
- Valuation Under Uncertainty: To learn about different methods for evaluating alternatives with uncertain consequences and their appropriateness for financial decision making.
- Portfolio Theory: To understand the risk and return characteristics of combinations of financial securities and the effects of diversification.
- Capital Asset Pricing Model: To learn about the valuation of securities in capital markets and the standard model of market equilibrium.
- Cost of Capital and Capital Structure: To identify the pivotal factors in determiningthe optimal capital structure. To assess a company's cost of capital.
- Business Valuation: To use discounted cash flow methods in business valuation.
- Advanced Business Valuation: To understand multiple period valuation models which allow for changing capital structures and the influence of taxation.
Learning Outcomes
Academic: After completing this module the students have fundamental knowledge about asset pricing concepts in capital markets. They are able to explain relationships between risk, return and cost of capital. They can analyze the effects of a change in the capital structure of a company on the value and the risk of this company. The students can choose and employ suitable valuation approaches for the respective task.
Soft Skills: The self-preparation of the students for the lecture facilitates the ability of the students to manage themselves and their time in a more effective and efficient way. The analysis of complex financial problems helps them to solve problems in a structured way. The interactive character of the lectures and tutorials strengthens the student’s discussion skills in the academic context.
Course Assessment
The credit points will be granted when the module has been successfully completed, i.e. when the final exam has been passed.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite for the course is the comprehension of valuation under certainty.

Whether it’s re-reading childhood favourites such as Harry Potter, enjoying Young Adult fiction well into adulthood, or discussing the Barbie movie on social media, engagement with youth culture is not limited to those under eighteen. As critic Deborah Stevenson puts it, children’s literature’s ”most powerful children are ex-children”: it is adults, after all, who are primarily responsible for writing, illustrating, editing, publishing and buying children’s books. Over the course of the semester we will critically examine our relationship with children’s and Young Adult literature from our positions as adult readers, scholars, critics and teachers. Using a variety of theoretical and critical approaches, we will navigate the complicated issues of memory and nostalgia; analyse texts we may know better in their remediated forms (as films or television programmes); consider the role fan culture plays in our understanding of children’s and YA literature; and explore what uses we can make of concepts of kinship, in order to connect our child, adolescent and adult selves over our reading lives. Primary texts under discussion will include Laura Ingalls Wilder’s The Long Winter (1940), L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables (1908), Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games (2008) and Louise Fitzhugh’s Harriet the Spy (1964). Students are encouraged to read these in advance.
