Democracy is both subject and object of innovation. It serves as a means for collectively addressing societal challenges while itself qualifying as an innovative governance approach aimed at approaching freedom and equality. This module provides an introduction to democratic theory and the interdisciplinary field of democratic innovation. It examines established theories of democracy and explores the growing need for democratic innovation in light of the limitations of liberal democratic systems. Students ought to engage with conceptual foundations as well as practical developments in attempting to (further) democratize contemporary societies.
