  • Career Opportunities

The programme offers a versatile skill set that prepares graduates for a wide range of career paths. This is achieved through a combination of theoretical approaches, empirical findings, and methods drawn from public relations, organisational communication, advertising, and impact research. These are especially useful for working in leading roles in strategic communication. The career options are just as diverse as the research areas in strategic communication. They include, for example, sustainability communication, public affairs, digital corporate communication, internal and executive communication, and political communication. The skills acquired in this programme are widely applicable: in companies, public authorities, NGOs, associations, foundations, or scientific organisations. Analytical background knowledge, e.g. on the conditions, processes, and impact mechanisms of strategic and public communication, is essential for managerial activities, e.g. in communication management. Skills in data processing, analysis, and preparation, such as those learnt in the research project, also open various doors in professional practice. In addition, the programme prepares students for a doctoral degree and an academic career.

  • Practical Experience

Knowledge of the basics, conditions, and effects of strategic communication, as well as of the relevant social science methods and instruments, is in high demand from professionals in the field of strategic communication. And this is precisely what Münster provides. In addition, students learn to adopt the perspective of audiences or stakeholder groups. They gain the ability to independently and systematically gather knowledge about target groups, which enables them to analyse, reflect on, and shape communication based on this understanding.

In addition, the Centre for Media Practice at the Department of Communication offers a variety of voluntary workshops each semester to supplement the studies. These include introductions to various software tools (e.g. Adobe software, MAXQDA), which are also relevant for professional practice, as well as training in key communication skills (e.g. writing press releases, the basics of search engine optimisation, photography, web design, moderation training, social media marketing, SEO). In addition, the University of Münster's Career Service supports students' career orientation with free seminars on individual career profiling (e.g. project management), workshops with employers, soft skills seminars (e.g. networking in the workplace), and job application training. Students can also use the IfK job portal to find student jobs, internships, and full-time vacancies to start a career. The applications are specifically tailored to graduates of the department. To gain practical experience, further opportunities are offered by various student organisations such as Radio Q, Campus Relations and move.
