IfK Students Design the Prison Magazine “Popshop”

(10.08.2026) Since the 2024/25 winter semester, IfK students have been supporting the prison magazine “Popshop” at the Herford Correctional Facility. As part of a working group at the Center for Media Practice, they design the layout of the magazine, which is published three times a year and gives adolescents and young adults in custody a voice of their own.

The articles are produced in collaboration with inmates and students at the Georg-Müller-Schule in Bielefeld. While researching topics and writing texts, the students use the layout program InDesign to creatively design the content. In the process, they gain practical experience in magazine production and oversee an issue from the initial drafts to the final print file.

The university newspaper “wissen|leben” reports in detail on this project—which is unique in Germany—the collaboration among those involved, and the students’ experiences.
