New research project: Corporate communication on socio-politically controversial topics

(09.01.2026) Companies are increasingly facing challenges when it comes to their stance and communication on socio-politically controversial issues. Communication on ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues in particular is proving challenging against the backdrop of growing polarisation between and within stakeholder groups and across geographical boundaries.

A new research project by the Strategic Communication II department (Prof. Dr Helena Stehle) at the Institute for Communication Studies is investigating these communication challenges. The aim is to analyse companies' communication strategies in these contexts, the associated motives and goals, the framework conditions and influencing factors that play a role, and the impact of this communication. The research project combines a content analysis of corporate communication in Germany and the USA with qualitative interviews with communication managers and consultants in both countries. In addition, a quantitative survey of employees in both countries will be conducted.

The study is being conducted in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Sabine Einwiller, University of Vienna, and Prof. Dr. Ganga Dhanesh, University of Maryland, and is funded by the Günter-Thiele-Foundation for Communication and Management (Leipzig). The project will start in January 2026 and will continue for 12 months.
