One day at a media company. Experience journalism and communication. Students visit NOZ/mh:n MEDIEN

(27 January 2026) How does a modern media company operate today? Thirty-one students from the Department of Communication explored this question during an excursion to NOZ/mh:n Medien. The programme included insights into editorial practice, digital working methods, and group and corporate communication.

NOZ/mh:n Medien is a regional media company based in Osnabrück. The company publishes daily newspapers and digital news services and is particularly active in north-west Germany. In addition to editorial work, the company also offers digital products and corporate and group communication services.

After a brief welcome and company presentation, there was an open discussion with editors Kim Gerecht (Head of Content Unit Osnabrück) and Lorena Dreusicke (Head of Ad Hoc Team and Editor-in-Chief of Politics & Society). Key issues in contemporary journalism were discussed: news fatigue, dealing with fake news, the use of artificial intelligence, and the future of newspapers between print and digital. The students took the opportunity to ask questions and received nuanced assessments from everyday editorial life.

Afterwards, two volunteers gave personal insights into their training, answered questions about starting a career and guided the group through various departments and editorial offices. This demonstrated how diverse journalistic work is organised within the media company.

After a short break, the practical part of the visit continued: in a workshop on user needs, the participants learned how journalistic content can be better aligned with the actual needs of the audience. The focus was on the user needs ‘inform’, ‘explain’, ‘perspective’, “help” and ‘inspire’. In small groups, the students developed topic ideas on the main themes of ‘New Year's resolutions’ and ‘Valentine's Day,’ putting the concept directly into practice.

Finally, the students gained insights into group and corporate communications at NOZ and were able to experience the role these areas play in interaction with editorial work. In an open question and answer session, individual questions about starting a career were also addressed. The excursion thus ended with a practical outlook on possible fields of activity in journalism and media communication.

The Department for Communication would like to thank the journalists and editorial teams involved for their time and the factual insights into their editorial work.
