With more than 4,900 students and 35 faculty members, the Faculty of Law at the University of Münster is one of the biggest law faculties in Germany. Each year, around 600 students complete their studies by passing the first state law examination, with a consistently higher-than-average number achieving "good" or "very good" results—just like their faculty, which regularly ranks among the top institutions.
The faculty’s main building, the Juridicum, is located in the heart of Münster, in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral and the historic city center. The former university library (Alte UB), right next to the Juridicum, houses the Institute of Criminal Sciences and the IV Support Unit.
“The department is the basic organizational unit of the university” (Section 64(1) Sentence 1 HRG). Accordingly, the Department of Law, which in Münster continues to bear the traditional name “Faculty of Law,” has the right and the duty to fulfill the university’s responsibilities in the field of law according to its own judgment.
According to the Department Regulations, the Department Council and the Dean’s Office are the governing bodies of the faculty. The Department Council is responsible for all matters concerning research and teaching within the department, unless these are assigned by law to the Dean’s Office as its own responsibility.
