AI4AM: Artificial Intelligence for Additive Manufacturing

3D FDM printers have been recognized as an efficient and promising technology which could revolutionise the manufacturing process and can reduce the cumulative energy demand for polymer products.Even though the latter additive manufacturing is becoming more and more popular the usage of 3D printers still requires expert knowledge and cumbersome trial and error handling preventing its use in mass-manufacturing.

The goal of this project is to develop closed-loop algorithms which make 3D printing as easy as printing a text document.  In particular, we want to integrate a variety of sensors like cameras and microphones into these gantry robots and develop new machine learning and computer vision algorithms to monitor the printing process. By collaborating with several industrial partners we aim to build our own intelligent 3D printer and test our solutions in large-scale and sustainable manufacturing.
