  • Advice from former students

    Studies

    • Courses tend to be theory-heavy and vary greatly in quality and difficulty. In most cases, you can switch courses without any problems during the first few weeks—just talk to the instructor.
    • Environmental Geochemistry is a highly recommended course; the instructor teaches in English, and the course materials are also in English; the academic level is high.

    Housing

    • Mixed-nationality Erasmus shared apartments in Portugal are hard to find, but highly recommended (search on the Erasmus Lisboa website or in the classifieds section of “Occasião” (every Thursday)). When viewing an apartment, always ask if you’re allowed to have guests.

    Life

    • It takes personal initiative to manage your student life and daily routine. If you put in the effort, you can put together an interesting class schedule and participate in great projects.
    • teoretico = lecture, teoretico-pratico = seminar with relatively little hands-on work, pratico = seminar with a lot of hands-on work
    • Wide range of university sports (including surfing)
    • Always eat at the cantina (very affordable: €2 for a drink, soup, salad, bread, main course, and dessert)

    Mobility

    • A monthly public transportation pass is available at a 50% discount with a student ID and proof of enrollment from your department.

    Other

    • Be sure to start learning the language before your stay! While most professors and students there also speak English, classes are taught in Portuguese, and many Erasmus students from Southern Europe speak little or no English. Language courses are also available locally, though the quality varies.
    • A language course is a good idea, but it costs €75
    • Set aside plenty of time for organizational matters
    • “Waiting in line or taking a number at the post office, at the bus stop, at the doctor’s office—basically, it’s the norm everywhere”
  • Further information

Acceptance: LÖKs, geoscientists, and likely geographers; those from other fields are no longer eligible

Finances: In some cases, slightly lower than in Germany; the university estimates monthly costs of €550 to €750

Accomodation: Possibility of staying in a student dormitory. However, due to limited space, there is no guarantee. The International/Mobility Office is responsible (Application Form)

Support from the host university: Great! The coordinators (Prof. Margarida Ramos is in charge of Plant Biology) are very helpful; it’s best to ask the professors directly if you can take their courses. There’s a buddy/mentor program where one or two Portuguese students help you with organizational matters, as well as getting to know people, etc. Organizations for Erasmus students: ESN Lisboa and Erasmuslisboa
