The library of the Institute for Early Medieval Studies is a reference library. It has working space, including use of photocopiers and personal computers, for a limited number of people. Borrowing of books is not possible.
The library has a collection of about 24,000 books. Apart from medieval historical sources, reference books and encyclopedias, the collection is mainly concerned with the following fields of interest that have emerged from the former Collaborative Research Centres (Sonderforschungsbereiche) [SFB] 7, 231 and 496.
- Historical-Archaeological studies
- Individuals and their communities (necrologies, books of confraternity)
- Studies in medieval allegory
- Onomasiological studies
