In current theological debates, the term ‘discernment in matters of faith’ (sensus fidei) is used inconsistently, sometimes disparately. This study examines the causes by analysing the use of the term since the Second Vatican Council in terms of conceptual history. In doing so, the revelational and ecclesiological assumptions of the recipients are shown to be decisive for the semantic overdetermination, as they charge the guiding metaphors commonly used to conceptualise the discernment in different ways.
Therefore, the study develops a new guiding metaphor in dialogue with the praxeology of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and with recourse to communally and pneumatically oriented theologies: The discernment in matters of faith is described as a ‘pneumatic-practical sense’ in a positionally plural form. From this, consequences are derived for topics linked to the term, such as the understanding of tradition, consensus and truth, and operationalised in relation to synodality.
