The German Congress of Philosophy is one of the largest and most important philosophical events in Germany and Europe. Guided by the respective theme, it reflects current debates in German-speaking philosophy and beyond.

The German Congress of Philosophy XXVI takes place in Münster from 22 to 26 September 2024 with the motto # digital | thinking. The congress invites participants to reflect on the challenges that digital change and the use and spread of artificial intelligence pose for philosophy. 

The congress will not only consider the challenges philosophy faces in the digital age, both as an academic discipline and as a way of human self-reflection and reflection upon the world. It will also embrace the challenge to question hitherto stable philosophical certainties and anthropological presuppositions in light of ever new successes in Artificial Intelligence, and will critically reflect on the consequences of binary, dualistic, Manichean or friend-foe thinking.

The congress interprets the central theme in a broad sense. It looks at the historical prerequisites and the foundations of digital thinking as well as considering alternatives to digital thinking. At the same time, it asks about the consequences of digital change for everyday life and society, research and science, for schools and universities: How will we philosophise tomorrow? Is it enough to change examination regulations and regulate the use of artificial intelligence by law? Do we need to rethink not only cognitive processes and ways of accumulating knowledge, but also global society and the idea of a democratic state, the attribution of responsibility and the determination of the addressees of moral norms, in the light of digital change? What could this mean for answering the questions of what is true and what exists, what is good and what is normatively right, what is beautiful and what is the telos of human life? And what consequences would it have for analysing other central philosophical problems? 

The congress will discuss these issues in more than 60 panels and individual events, some of which will be organised by the working groups and corporative members of the DGPhil, as well as in 40 sections covering all central areas of philosophy. The extensive congress programme will be published successively from 15 May 2024 and the titles and speakers of the selected contributions will be added at the end of June 2024.
