Hands-on Metabolomics Workshop (LC-MS) for PhD Researchers
This workshop offers PhD participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in real, hands-on metabolomics. Rather than working with generic training samples, participants are invited to bring material from their own research projects. The entire journey from experimental planning to data interpretation is covered using state-of-the-art GC-MS and LC-MS instrumentation.
To ensure everyone arrives well-prepared, an online meeting will take place about two months before the course begins. During this session, participants can introduce the samples they plan to bring and receive guidance on optimal sampling strategies. This conversation will help participants shape their experimental design carefully and avoid common pitfalls before stepping into the lab.
The first course day focuses on orientation and preparation. Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of mass spectrometry and metabolomics, gaining insight into what makes these approaches powerful for systems biology, biomedical research, and beyond. The instruments will be explored, the production of metabolite data will be discussed, and the laboratory session will focus on preparing the samples that participants have brought with them.
After this hands-on session, there will be a one-week break while the samples are processed in the instruments. When the group meets again for the second day, the focus shifts to data analysis. Participants will work through their own datasets under close guidance, learning how to visualize metabolite profiles, evaluate data quality, and interpret results in a biological context. This is often the most exciting part of the workshop, and time will be reserved for discussion, troubleshooting, and comparing different experimental outcomes across research areas.
For those who would like more time to work independently, an optional third day is available. This session allows participants to continue analyzing their own data, and to conclude the workshop with a final interpretation and wrap-up discussion.
The course will take place in September, the registration will be already in June. Places are limited to a maximum of 12 participants to ensure personal guidance and plenty of time for questions and hands-on work.
For those seeking a practical, collaborative, and research-relevant introduction to metabolomics, this workshop offers an excellent opportunity — and a chance to bring individual research projects into the training environment.
