Taking up impulses from the ranks of academics, the Rectorate has set out to take a critical look at the University of Münster's research profile and areas of potential and to embark on a comprehensive and consistently participatory profile sharpening process.

To this end, the Vice-Rector for Research, Prof Dr Monika Stoll, invited working groups to be formed. With the help of the dean's offices and around 150 committed academics, 13 working groups discussed, developed, sharpened and named the profile and potential areas from a scientific perspective based on criteria and data.

At the ‘Jour Fixe Forschung’ on 20 April 2023, the Rector of the University of Münster, Prof. Dr Johannes Wessels, and Prof. Dr Monika Stoll presented the results of the working group phase in their overall view and presented the new concept for the publication of the research profile of the University of Münster for discussion. As an external guest, Prof. Dr Christoph Burmann from the University of Bremen contributed his expertise in knowledge and brand management and provided additional impetus in the discussion on naming the profile and potential areas. Thanks to the lively participation and the many impulses from the entire university, the new research profile of the University of Münster will be published shortly.

Of course, this is not the end of the University of Münster's involvement with its profile: through the Future Lab, the existing profile and potential areas are continuously coordinated and invited to exchange formats that further stimulate interfaculty and interdisciplinary collaborative research, shorten communication channels and enable needs-based funding. New, creative and/or high-risk projects and initiatives that could potentially add new facets to the university's profile are networked through the Future Lab and also receive strategic and financial support.
