Prof. Dr. Cornelia Brantner

Cornelia Brantner is Associate Professor at the Department of Geography, Media and Communication and Coordinator of the Center for Geomedia Studies at Karlstad University in Sweden. She brings expertise in visual communication, communication infrastructures, geomedia, digital communication and research on publics and (in)equality. Her teaching and research profile is characterized by the application of both qualitative and quantitative methods.
Brantner is currently leading the project "Digital infrastructure sovereignty: Towards a public value-based media policy for the datafied Swedish welfare state", funded by the Swedish Science Council. This important research project investigates the increasing datafication of social, economic and political processes, which is largely dependent on the resources of private operators. This dependence harbors risks for the anchoring of universal values in the digital society. The project aims to analyze the impact of the digital communication infrastructure on the distribution of communicative power in Swedish society. It aims to analyze the Swedish infrastructure and platform landscape and how this ecology affects a media system that is supposed to promote a democratic public discourse and democratic values.
