English Drama Group (EDG)

Welcome to the English Drama Group Münster

Who are we—and what do we do?

The English Drama Group Münster (EDG) was founded in 1975, when an Englishman named Paul Willin had the idea of bringing English-language theatre to Münster’s stage. The idea took hold—and fifty years later, the EDG is still very much alive and kicking.

Each year, we bring one or two productions to the Studiobühne, showcasing the breadth of British, Irish, and American theatre and poetry. Our repertoire ranges from Alan Ayckbourn, Tom Stoppard, Mark Ravenhill, David Greig, Mike Bartlett, and Ben Elton to the occasional Shakespeare—alongside highlights such as the world premiere of a previously unpublished play by Aldous Huxley.

Through the decades, the EDG has always been shaped by a diverse and evolving cast of anglophiles and theatre enthusiasts. While many of our members are students, both Germans applying their English skills and internationals making connections in Münster regardless of their German language levels, the group has never been limited to one discipline or career path: medical doctors, economists, chemists, IT specialists, designers, doctoral candidates, teachers, alumni and even television actors have all shared the stage—some for a season, others for 10, 15, or more than 20 years.

What unites us is curiosity, creativity, and a love of theatre in English. The EDG is a genuine melting pot: intergenerational, international, intercultural and interdisciplinary.
