What kind of world do we tell ourselves about today, and how do we do it? Steffen Martus’s literary history Erzählte Welt (Rowohlt 2025) and Moritz Baßler’s study Populärer Realismus (C. H. Beck 2022) are the leading works in German studies on this topic. They provide large-scale accounts and comprehensive explanations of literary developments over the past 30 years. Current writing styles, subject matter, and narrative patterns are influenced by changing conditions of production, circulation, and reception. The two authors discuss with Antonia Eder how, what, and where we read, which books we buy, and when they can still be sold successfully at all.
