A glance at the plates brings us closer to history: a cultural studies perspective on the festive culinary traditions of the 16th and 17th centuries reveals a world that is both familiar and utterly alien. Who invented it? Who actually ate such things? Did it really have to be that much? A journey through the highs and lows of gluttony and gourmet dining, through lavish feasts and grotesque banquets. The event takes place as part of the conference ‘Times of Scarcity: Early Modern Literature under the Influence of the “Little Ice Age”’.
