City of Münster - The World's Most Liveable City

Münster is a city with the history and character of a medieval town, but also a very lively university city with around 50,000 students. Münster was awarded “The World’s Most Liveable City” in 2004 (in the category of cities with 200,000 – 750,000 inhabitants) and is repeatedly selected as the most bicycle friendly city in Germany.

Typical about Münster is the enormous number of bicycles or Leezen, as they are known here, in the streets - the number of bikes nearly doubles the number of residents. The Promenade, a green belt around the inner city, where the city walls once stood, is Münster’s famous “bicycle highway”.

If you want to enjoy life in Münster, just rent a bike and drive around and have a look at…
... the Prinzipalmarkt, Münster’s “living room”, the main street of the historic city center: an old cobbled street lined with arcades and historic gabled houses and the old Town Hall, where the Peace of Westphalia was confirmed in 1648
… the farmer’s market in front of the Dom (St Paul’s Cathedral, the largest church in Westphalia) on saturdays and wednesdays with a rich and colorful choice of food and flowers and nice sidewalk cafés
… the atmosphere at the historic pubs of the Kuhviertel area and at clubs and restaurants at the Kreativkai, the old docks area at the Dortmund-Ems canal, especially on a nice summer evening
… culture at one of the famous museums like the Pablo Picasso Museum of Graphic Arts or the Landesmuseum, and contemporary sculptured art all over the city
… the baroque Schloss (Castle), today the university’s main building with the University Botanical Garden in the Residence Grounds
… the Rieselfelder, a Natura2000-bird sanctuary just outside the city
And there is much more to see and enjoy!
