The Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics: Dynamics of Tradition and Innovation” at the University of Münster, Germany, wishes to appoint a

Doctoral Research Associate

within the research project A3-30 “Secularism as a (post-)colonial challenge? Religion and Republicanism in Marseille, 1946-1989” under the direction of Prof Silke Mende. This fixed-term part-time position (65%) is offered for a three-year term and is scheduled to start on 01.10.2022 or the next possible date.

The Cluster is an interdisciplinary research association with a thematic focus on the dynamic power of religion as a driving force behind political and social changes. Disciplines involved include history, political science, sociology, Catholic and Protestant theology and law, Islamic studies and theology, Jewish studies, Egyptology, archaeology, philosophy, philology, art history and ethnology. Your tasks:

  • Participation in the research project A3-30 “Secularism as a (post-)colonial challenge? Religion and Republicanism in Marseille, 1946-1989” under the direction of Prof Silke Mende

  • Involvement in the general research activities of the Cluster

  • Participation in the activities of the Chair of Modern and Contemporary History (19th to 21st century)

This position is tied to working towards a doctorate. This includes participating in the study program of the Graduate School of the Cluster of Excellence.

Our expectations:

  • An above-average university degree in History (university degree: German Diplom or master's degree) that qualifies you for a doctorate is required.

  • Good knowledge of French and Western European contemporary history is expected.

  • Good command of French is required, good command of German and English is expected.

  • Strong organisational and team skills, as well as social competence, are required.
