God’s Revelation in the Human Word
Publication of the first volume in the series “Herder’s Theological Commentary on the Quran”
The Islamic theologian Mouhanad Khorchide of the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster has published the first volume in the series “Herder’s Theological Commentary on the Quran”. The project combines for the first time the findings of historical-critical and literary analysis practised by Arabic and Islamic studies with the Islamic tradition of text commentary. The theological commentary reveals the significance of the Quran on the one hand as a literary text with a historical context, and on the other as the speech of God. Through this combination, Mouhanad Khorchide forges a new approach to the Quran. The individual volumes in the series do not provide a continuous commentary on the text; rather, they deal with issues such as violence in the Quran. Each volume can be read by itself.
The first volume is entitled “God’s Revelation in the Human Word” and is the first of 17 planned volumes in the series “Herder’s Theological Commentary on the Quran”. Although the Quran is considered to be the revealed word of God, it is also understood as a historical text. This encounter between seemingly contradictory methods is the subject of the opening volume of the series, in which Mouhanad Khorchide develops his own hermeneutic method alongside the current state of research, and describes his own methodological approach.
