A Crosslinguistic Investigation of Phonological Gender Assignment

Guest Lecture by Dr. Ruth Kramer (Georgetown University)

On November 8, 2021, GS eal enjoyed a guest lecture by Dr. Ruth Kramer (Georgetown University) on "A crosslinguistic investigation of phonological gender assignment". A Distributed Morphology approach was used to argue against assigning a grammatical gender based on phonological features. The content was illustrated with the help of an Afro-Asian language and a Niger-Congo language.

Doctoral Colloquium

of the Graduate School

In the doctoral colloquium, the doctoral candidates present the progress in their dissertation projects in approximately 20-30 minute presentations. Each presentation is followed by a discussion of about 10-20 minutes, in which the lecturers present comment on the project and give suggestions for further work.

Optimal Categorisation: Emergent Gender in Oceania

Guest Lecture by Michael Franjieh, Greville G. Corbett and Alexandra Grandiso

On July 12, 2021, the PhD program welcomed Michael Franjieh, Greville G. Corbett, and Alexandra Grandison from the Surrey Morphology Group. The talk title was "Optimal Categorization: emergent gender in Oceania." Experimental studies were presented that document the emergence of a so-called gustatory system in a small language.

Academic Writing

Workshop by Dr. Markus Rheindorf (University of Vienna)

On July 9, 2021, Dr. Markus Rheindorf (University of Vienna) conducted a workshop on Academic Writing. As workshops specifically on academic writing in German had already been offered in previous semesters, the current workshop focused on English as a language of publication. Conventions of linguistics were also addressed. Methods for structuring one's own text and resources for working on style and grammar (for example, the British National Corpus) were discussed, among other things.

Empirical Poetics: Experimental Approaches to Poetry and Rhyme

Guest Lecture by Dr. Stefan Blohm

On July 5, 2021, Dr. Stefan Blohm from the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics gave a lecture on "Empirical poetics: Experimental approaches to poetry and rhyme". Studies were presented in which questions of literary studies are examined from a new perspective using methods of neuro- and psycholinguistics.

Design and Implementation of Digital Experiments

In the summer semester of 2021, the GS eal invited four female scientists  to present their studies with a special focus on the design and implementation of digital experiments. This gave the PhD students the opportunity to get to know different formats and to deal with the technical as well as methodological challenges and opportunities.
