Relations between scientific thought and naval power. The Mexican Navy and its Transnational Integration into Naval and Military Scientific Networks (1821-1914) (working title)
My thesis project is provisionally titled “Relations between scientific thought and naval power. The Mexican Navy and its Transnational Integration into Naval and Military Scientific Networks (1821-1914)”. It studies the paths of the integration of the nascent Mexican naval community into the European scientific and military community, particularly with its French, Spanish, and German counterparts. This relationship is addressed in two directions: in the flow from the scientific to the military (the tendency to transform the art of war into the science of war) and from the military to the scientific (transforming military members into scientific communities capable of conducting research activities and participating in the development and consolidation of their respective nation-states). Thus, the research aims to identify how this interaction between Mexican seafarers and European shaped, and was influenced by, the configuration of a small community of Mexican sailors.
