Research Project

Learned symbols for emotional concepts – on the neural basis of emotional word processing and learning

Neuroscientific and behavioral studies investigating emotional word processing reveal selective and prioritized processing of emotional words – learned symbols for emotional concepts (e.g. Kissler et al., 2009). Interestingly, the neural responses to these symbols resemble those to materials that have an innate evolutionary significance (e.g. emotional faces or scenes): In EEG and MEG differential emotional processes are reflected in the modulation of early, mid-latency and late event-related potentials, such as the P1 (e.g. Ortigue et al, 2004), EPN and the LPP (e.g., Junghöfer et al., 2001). However, little is known about the process of hooking up (pseudo)words with an emotional meaning. How does the emotional content influence the learning process on a behavioral level? Which are the neural mechanisms underlying the acquisition of emotional words?
In the project at hand we investigate the neural reflections of emotional word processing and word learning in healthy populations by means of combined neurophysiological methods (EEG/MEG, cTBS). The future goal of this project involves the implementation of word learning as a tool to study functional and dysfunctional learning processes. The latter are discussed as an important factor in the development of emotional disorders like anxiety disorders and depression.
This research is funded by the IZKF (Do3/021/10).
