The KoWi Master's programme trains students to become communication and media experts whose specialist and methodological knowledge is highly sought after in a wide range of professional fields. From traditional and cross-media journalism to public relations and digital politics, as well as careers in academic and non-academic research – KoWi graduates have a variety of career options after graduation.
With a changing (media) world, new career opportunities are constantly emerging: analytical skills and critical thinking are in high demand in politics, business, society, and of course, academia. The degree qualifies graduates for professions on both a national and international level where research and investigation are essential (e.g. in publishing houses, broadcasting organisations, online companies, state and public institutions, as well as in corporate communications and marketing). Naturally, pursuing a PhD and a career in academia is also a possibility.
In the Master's degree programme “Communication Science” at the Department of Communication (IfK), students acquire core skills that are fundamental for successful careers. For example, prospective journalists benefit from knowledge about topics such as Deepfakes, polarisation, and trust. Anyone working in sustainability communication should know about its perception and impact. Additionally, professional handling of data, as learned in the methods module and, of course, the research project, is also absolutely necessary in various fields of work.
Furthermore, the Centre for Media Practice at the Department of Communication offers a variety of workshops each semester that students can voluntarily attend to complement their studies. These include introductions to various software applications (Adobe software, MAXQDA, etc.), which are also relevant in professional contexts, as well as training in practical communication skills (e.g. writing press releases, the basics of search engine optimisation, photography, web design, moderation training, social media marketing, SEO). In addition, the Career Service of the University of Münster also supports the career orientation of students with a series of free seminars on individual career profiling (e.g. project management), employer workshops, soft skills seminars (e.g. networking in the workplace), and application training. Students can also use the IfK job portal to find working student jobs, internships, and entry-level jobs that are specifically tailored to graduates of the department. Further opportunities to gain practical experience are offered by various student organisations such as Radio Q, Campus Relations, and move.
