IfK students become SchlauRaum ambassadors
(30.06.2025) Johanna Stahl and Noemi Struckmeier bring science to the feeds of their fellow students at the SchlauRaum science festival.
How can science be communicated in such a way that it also reaches young people? This question not only concerns the City of Münster's Science Office - but also Johanna Stahl and Noemi Struckmeier, students at the Department of Communication Science (IfK) at the University of Münster. As ambassadors for this year's SchlauRaum festival, they are taking on the task of picking up on exciting topics from the festival programme and presenting them specifically for students via social media.
The idea for the collaboration was born in the seminar ‘Science (students) in the public eye’ by IfK employee Lena Zils. She regularly invites Dr Erik Tolen from the Science Office to her events as a guest speaker. ‘Erik gives the students valuable insights into practice - and they in turn provide creative impetus for urban communication,’ says Zils. The suggestion to actively involve students in the festival emerged from one of these seminars.
The SchlauRaum festival, which will take place from 5 to 11 July 2025, will transform Münster into an open science campus. It is organised by the University of Münster, Münster University of Applied Sciences, the UKM and Münster Marketing. This year's motto is "Why? Why? Healthy? Münster's SchlauRaum science festival gives you the answers". In lectures, films, readings, exhibitions and more, speakers from research and practice will explain current developments and visions for the future on topics such as healthy nutrition, first aid, climate change, mental health and digital medicine.
In order to reach target groups that are often not addressed by traditional science communication, the organisers are working with student ambassadors for the first time this year. Johanna Stahl and Noemi Struckmeier are preparing for their role in close coordination with the Science Office. During the festival, they will report directly from events, share impressions and interviews and show which topics move their generation. ‘The collaboration with the IfK is a great benefit for us,’ emphasises Dr Erik Tolen. ‘The students bring fresh perspectives and help us to critically reflect on and further develop our communication channels.’
