71th Annual Conference of the DGPuK: IfK researchers represented with several contributions

(March 17, 2026) The 71st Annual Conference of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK) will take place in Dortmund from March 18 to 20, 2026. The conference is being hosted by the Institute of Journalism at TU Dortmund University, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The conference’s overarching theme is #Science #Communication #Democracy. The focus is thus on the question of how the interplay between science and media-mediated communication is changing under the conditions of a democracy under global pressure. Topics include freedom of expression and academic freedom, new communication constellations, and the role of journalism, the public sphere, and AI-driven information processes.

Researchers from the Institute for Communication Studies at the University of Münster will also be represented at the conference with several presentations and chairing duties. The contributions cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from political communication on TikTok to science and higher education communication, as well as issues of the digital public sphere, information literacy, and visions for the future of journalism.

Founded in 1963, the DGPuK is the largest professional society for communication scholars in the German-speaking world. Over 400 participants from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as international guests come together every year to present and discuss their research at the annual conference. More than 1,000 members are currently organised under the umbrella of the DGPuK in 19 thematic specialist groups, which hold internal conferences and workshops in addition to the joint annual congress. In addition to the information service Aviso, the two renowned journals Publizistik and M&K Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft as well as the online journal Studies in Communication and Media also belong to the professional society.
