Professor Joel Anderson, Ph.D.

Joel Anderson is Assistant Professor for Practical Philosophy at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands. From 1994 until 2004 he has held various positions at Washington University in St. Louis as an Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Assistant Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley and a Fellow at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, the National Endowment for the Humanities (U.S.) and the University of Connecticut. Furthermore, he has been a Fellow at the University of Frankfurt and the Northwestern University.

Joel Anderson is the author of numerous papers in the field of moral psychology and critical social theory, and focuses especially on issues of autonomy, agency, and normativity. He is Associate Editor of the journal Philosophical Explorations, where he edited a special issue on Free Will as Part of Nature: Habermas and His Critics. Moreover, he co-edited a volume on Autonomy and the Challenges to Liberalism (with John Christman) and is currently writing a book on Scaffolded Autonomy: The Construction, Impairment, and Enhancement of Human Agency.
